Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano

2–5 yrs

Description

This exciting experiment demonstrates a chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar, producing a fizzy eruption that mimics a volcano. Children will learn about acid-base reactions and gas formation while engaging in hands-on exploration.

Details

1. Place a small container (e.g., plastic cup) on a tray to catch spills.
2. Fill the container halfway with baking soda (about 2–3 tablespoons).
3. In a separate cup, mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with a few drops of food coloring for visual effect.
4. Slowly pour the vinegar mixture into the baking soda container.
5. Watch the fizzy eruption as carbon dioxide gas is produced.
6. Discuss what caused the eruption and encourage the child to try different amounts of baking soda or vinegar.
